The 24-year-old will now be looking to ensure that he justifies that kind of pay-check. The former Sunderland man has certainly been an integral player for Brendan Rodgers so far this season and will hope to build on that next term.

As we begin to envisage the future we’re likely to have under the England international’s leadership, here’s a look back at his five greatest Liverpool moments thus far…

5) Winning the League Cup in 2012

Henderson would play at Wembley three times during his first season at the club, most notably helping the Reds win the League Cup against Cardiff City. Henderson played the opening hour, coming off shortly before Martin Skrtel equalised, with Craig Bellamy his replacement. The game finished 2-2, with the Reds winning on penalties.

4) Scored one and made one vs Arsenal

Henderson was the Reds stand-out performer in North London as we secured a point against Arsenal back in January 2013. He made the first for Luis Suarez early on before netting the second himself on the hour mark. Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott ensured that the host came from behind to draw but it was still a fine day for our young No. 14.

3) Helping to thrash Spurs 4-0, sending us to the top of the table

Henderson scored the fourth and final goal in the rout of Tottenham Hotspur as Anfield last Spring, as Liverpool jumped to the top of the Premier League table. Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho also found the net after an early Younes Kaboul own goal had set Brendan Rodgers’ side on the route to victory. A wonderful all-round performance.

2) Being made vice-captain

Following Daniel Agger’s departure last summer, Henderson was made vice-captain. He enjoyed a fantastic start to life in the role – remaining unbeaten for 14 games with the armband until defeat to the Gunners earlier this month. He remains the heavy favourite to succeed Gerrard at the start of next season and looks well worth it.

1) THAT goal against Manchester City

He’s scored a couple of amazing goals this season but this one is surely the most memorable. In what could still prove to be a crucial game against our top four rivals, the midfielder unleashed a stunning drive past Joe Hart to give the Reds the lead. You can watch the goal again in all its glory in the video below…
