We have endured a difficult season, and Saturday’s goalless draw against West Brom, as well as Manchester City’s narrow victory over Aston Villa, has left clinging onto only a slim hope that we may yet still qualify for next season’s Champions League.

According to the Metro, Nicol – who made nearly 350 league appearances for us between 1981 and 1994 – suggested that Rodgers should only remain in charge until a better option becomes available. In the former defender’s eyes, and unfortunately for the Northern Irishman, the perfect candidate – Jurgen Klopp – will be out of work in the summer, and we should be making a large effort to bring him to Anfield.

“Here’s the bottom line: if there’s nobody better than him [Rodgers] available then he stays,”

“The problem is Mr. Klopp’s available, he should be there,” the former Scotland international said.

The Borussia Dortmund manager confirmed earlier in the month that he will be leaving the Bundesliga side at the end of the season.

Klopp may have worked heroics at Dortmund in the past, but they too have had a disappointing season, that for a long time looked as if it may end in the seemingly unthinkable – relegation. Rodgers has arguably had a similar experience – obviously in a shorter space of time, and without as large a drop as Dortmund experienced for much of this campaign.

He did however, turn a side that were falling further and further from the battle for the top four into title contenders. Perhaps Klopp may be an exciting alternative, but surely Rodgers has brought himself some time before he is thrown out the door?
