Players will sign for Liverpool regardless of Champions League football, says Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers is unfazed by the impact that missing out on Champions League football next season will have on the club’s ability to bring in the very best players.

Liverpool need to snap up this Real Madrid star before he goes elsewhere

Saturday’s draw with West Brom has left us seven points off a place in the Premier League’s top four, and while we have a game in hand over Manchester United – our nearest rivals – we are running out of fixtures with which to catch them. Unfortunately, the Europa League beckons.

Despite it seeming that we are destined to miss out on the main competition, according to the Liverpool Echo, Rodgers believes that what he is trying to achieve at our club will be more than enough to entice the most sought after players from across the continent.

“If it’s right for the player, and the project is right for them to come and learn and develop, then if we’re not in the Champions League – which is probably highly unlikely – players will still want to come.

“Of course, they want to play in the Champions League.

“But if they’ve watched us over a few years, this is maybe a season we miss out on, but if we can regroup again, get some quality starters in for the summer, then we can go on another great adventure next season and hopefully get back in there,” he said.

Whilst it may appear that Rodgers is being optimistic, and making the right rhetoric to keep the pressure off, it looks as if there may be some truth in what he is suggesting. The Daily Mirror reported at the weekend that we had held talks with Memphis Depay, the PSV Eindhoven wonderkid that is likely to be the subject of the summer’s biggest saga.

If we can secure any of our targets that are being coveted by any top club featuring in next season’s Champions League, then that will be a big vote of confidence for what Rodgers is doing at our club, as the best players available are clearly buying into what he wants to achieve.
