Christian Benteke’s agent discusses Liverpool transfer rumours

Eris Kismet has rubbished suggestions that his client, Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, has held talks with Liverpool over a potential summer switch.

In quotes taken by the Daily Mirror, he insisted that the Belgian instead remains fully focused on helping guide Tim Sherwood’s side to Premier League survival, although he did not rule out the possibility of a future move.

“At the moment, there is no interest,” said Kismet. “Every player and staff member is concentrated on avoiding relegation, anything else is just a distraction.

“I know everyone wants the same thing because I watch the games and I think Aston Villa are playing the best football in England right now.”

Benteke has enjoyed a fine run of form as part of a resurgent Villa side, scoring nine goals in his last eight games. That tally included one against Liverpool at Wembley, as we were cruelly denied a place in the FA Cup final.

The Metro suggested last week that the 24-year-old could soon be the subject of a £30m bid from the Reds, with the deal also likely to include Rickie Lambert, a story that drew plenty of interest from Liverpool fans.

Unsurprisingly, those reports have proven extremely premature. However, it would be amiss of us to rule out any possibility of this move happening, particularly if Benteke is able to continue his goalscoring form until the end of the season.

We all know that we’re in desperate need for a new centre-forward, a fact that was once again demonstrated by Tuesday night’s toothless performance against Hull City. We’d be able to offer Benteke European football and he could in turn be the man to help restore us to the promised land of Champions League football.
