With the likes of Emre Can and Colin Pascoe in attendance, the Reds would have been keen to impress with a quick start. However, it was the home side that looked the brighter in the opening minutes. And they were rewarded for their early pressure when a threatening cross from Ryan Ledson found Harry Charsley at the back post. The midfielder was able to convert his volley from close range.

But the goal appeared to work oddly in our favour, as our side seemed to wake up and impose themselves upon the game. Within three minutes of the opener, we were back level thanks to Kent. The midfielder used a good bit of skill to get away from Ledson, and found himself in plenty of space from which to test Russell Griffiths in the Everton goal. Kent – who has only recently returned from three months out – placed a delicious effort into the bottom corner from all of 25 yards. We were suddenly in the ascendancy.

Samed Yesil tested Griffiths just before the break, but the stopper was able to deny the German, and keep things level going into the interval.

It wasn’t until 20 minutes from time that we saw the next real moment of quality. Once again, Kent was the provider. He cut inside from the left, and curled a screamer into the bottom corner that clipped the post on its way in.

And the win was sealed eight minutes later, after Sheyi Ojo was brought down in the box. The winger would dust himself down, and coolly slot the penalty into the top corner with an arrogance of a player destined for the first team.

However, the night belonged to Kent. His brilliant brace will surely not go unnoticed by Brendan Rodgers.
