However, something that might have flown under the radar thus far is the need for a tune-up in the full-back positions. With Glen Johnson out of contract at the end of the season and Jon Flanagan facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, we’re running very low on options.

The Liverpool Echo have used that as their inspiration for hand-picking eight potential signings who could fill that void before the start of the next season. In the list below, we’ve ranked and analysed those eight options before landing on the ideal player to come in over the break.

8) Andre Wisdom (West Brom)

The 21-year-old has enjoyed two respectably productive spells out on loan, first with Derby County and now with West Bromwich Albion, making 63 appearances in total. The form he showed as a teenager in a Liverpool shirt also suggests that he deserves another chance but Rodgers is likely to want some experience from somewhere.

7) Brice Dja Djedje (Marseille)

The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international has enjoyed a solid season with his French employers, helping them to fifth place in Ligue 1. He plays an important part in Marcelo Bielsa’s pressing system – similar to the one Rodgers favours at Liverpool – and has shown his versatility by also featuring in a midfield role earlier in the campaign.

6) Kieran Trippier (Burnley)

One of the real plus points from the Clarets season, which looks set to end in relegation from the Premier League. The 24-year-old former Manchester City academy graduate has played in all 34 top flight fixtures for Sean Dyche’s side so far this season, chipping in with four assists and making an impressive 54 key passes.

5) Dani Alves (Barcelona)

The Brazilian is out of contract at the season and has a world class CV to his name. However, his age (31), lack of experience in English football and sure-to-be high wages are all major drawbacks. Alves has made 39 appearances for Barcelona so far this season and could yet choose to stay at the Camp Nou, at least according to Goal.

4) Matteo Darmian (Torino)

The 25-year-old has flourished since making the step-up to the Italian national team last season. The former AC Milan youngster can play on the right or left, potentially offering Rodgers just what he’s looking for. He’s scored four goals and provided two assists so far this season, proving that he likes to get forward when possible.

3) Aaron Cresswell (West Ham)

One of the bargain buys of last summer, having joined the Hammers from Championship side Ipswich. He’s played all 34 league games so far this season, scoring twice. His form has reportedly attracted the interest of Manchester City (via the Express), while the Echo believe the 25-year-old is on the cusp of the England team.

2) Jordan Amavi (Nice)

You might not have heard of this 21-year-old Frenchman, whose performances have him closing in on the national side. The Echo reference his 106 tackles this season – no defender has won more – as well as his 63 completed dribbled and 30 chances created. The only downside? He’s a left-back and wants to play in Moreno’s position.

1) Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

The 24-year-old England international looks set to be one of the most wanted Premier League players come the summer. Clyne has played 36 games in all competitions so far this season, scoring three goals. His form has helped inspire the Saints to the top seven and a potential return to European football in their next campaign.
