Best available free transfer XI: including Fiorentina goalkeeper and Manchester City man

While Brendan Rodgers has previously spoken about the need for marquee signings in the summer, he would surely be a bit foolish not to look towards some of the players that will be available for nothing at the end of the season. Some of the men that are set to leave their current club on a free would add some serious – and much-needed – depth to our squad, which will hopefully help our chances of cementing a place in the Premier League’s top four.

Here is an XI made up of the best players that will be available for nothing in the coming months, with news circulating that we’re considering both James Milner and Neto – both of whom make this side…

GK- Neto (Fiorentina)

The 25-year-old has been excellent for the majority of the season for Fiorentina, so it is no surprise that the Metro have suggested we may be hoping to sign the Brazilian as a replacement for Brad Jones, who himself is out of contract this summer. Simon Mignolet will probably benefit from having more competition.

RB- Dani Alves (Barcelona)

Alves has been a tremendous servant for the Catalan side, winning practically everything available to him during his stint. Amazingly – given the amount of time he’s been around for – he’s still only 31, so has plenty of time ahead of him.

CB- Andrea Ranocchia (Inter Milan)

The 27-year-old was made captain at Inter Milan at the start of the season, and is a strong force at the heart of Roberto Mancini’s defence, but may be seeking a new challenge after four years at San Siro.

CB- Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa)

The Dutchman has been an important part of Tim Sherwood’s plans at Villa Park, and has led the revival from the brink of relegation to a position where they now look like they should now survive, should they continue playing in the same manner they have done for the past few weeks.

LB- Christian Fuchs (Schalke)

With 25 appearances under his belt this season, Fuchs will be an unfortunate miss for the Bundesliga side, should he fail to agree an extension to his stay in Germany. He has four league assists this campaign, so can create goals as well as prevent them.

RCM- James Milner (Manchester City)

According to the Metro, the 29-year-old is set to move to Anfield at the end of the season, after struggling to hold down a regular place in Manuel Pellegrini’s side. He can fill in practically anywhere on the pitch, making him a valuable asset to have in any squad.

LCM- Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)

The World Cup winner is expected to leave the Bernabeu this summer, after five years with the Spanish giants. The experience he would bring to any side – despite still being just 28 – will make him one of the most sought after players in Europe.

CM- Yevhen Konoplyanka (Dnipro)

The Ukrainian has been the talisman of the Dnipro side for nearly a decade, and has been the driving force behind the team’s charge to the Europa League semi-final. His performance against Ajax in a previous round was particularly impressive. He is more used to playing as a winger, but has the technical ability to play down the middle.

ST- Didier Drogba (Chelsea)

He may 37, but the Ivorian has proved that he still has the ability to find the back of the net, which has been our Achilles heel this season. He arguably has one more season in him at Premier League level, which would put a lot of sides off, but with no fee required to sign him, it is a very tempting proposition.

ST- Luiz Adriano (Shakhtar Donetsk)

His lack of experience in the major European leagues arguably counts against him, but the Brazilian has proved that he can score against some of the continent’s best sides, as he is this season’s leading goalscorer in the Champions League. Once again, the risk of signing him is negated by the opportunity to get him for free.

ST- Andre-Pierre Gignac (Marseille)

The 29-year-old has been in fantastic form for his club this season, scoring 20 goals in Ligue 1 alone. If he was to leave France, he would be an excellent option to have available to Brendan Rodgers, as he has proven that he can score regularly with both feet.
