Liverpool are apparently close to agreeing a fee for Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic, whilst reported target Yohan Cabaye is growing frustrated at Paris Saint-Germain, and has thus hinted that he may be looking to leave the Ligue 1 side.

Former Newcastle midfielder Cabaye has made only 21 appearances for Laurent Blanc’s team this season, nearly half of which have come from the bench. The Daily Star report that the lack of opportunities since his move last January has left him considering his future.

“It is super important for me, I want to play at Euro 2016,” said the former Newcastle man.

“I need to speak to the [France] boss [Deschamps] and my representatives to see what is best for me,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Metro report that Kovacic is close to leaving the Serie A side, as Roberto Mancini’s desire to link up with Manchester City star Yaya Toure once again could see him relegated to the bench. A fee of £17.7m could be required to bring the 20-year-old to our club.

Signing both players would be a real statement from Brendan Rodgers about the direction we are going in. Due to our lack of goalscoring options, our creative midfielders have often featured in more advanced positions this season. Both players could add a lot of flair to a midfield that, with the likes of Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva, is arguably focused with predominantly winning the ball back.

With Steven Gerrard leaving in the summer, we need at least one, and maybe two top notch midfielders.
