Many Liverpool fans were left disappointed yesterday when Depay – a rumoured target for the Reds – agreed a deal to join Premier League rivals Manchester United instead (via BBC Sport).

However, Rodgers has attempted to quash rumours that we were ever interested in such a deal. In quotes taken by the Daily Mirror, he said: “It wasn’t something we were ever interested in. We already have four wingers at the club. We have other priorities.”

This is news that will certainly raise a few eyebrows around Merseyside, especially after rumours linking us with Paul-Georges Ntep, another left-sided player, emerged just hours before the Depay story was confirmed. Rodgers also confirmed reports that Sturridge will be out of action for several months, with the Northern Irishman hoping to welcome him back to training around September. He said: “We anticipate Daniel will be back training around September time. We are hopeful issues he’s had have been resolved.”

The Mirror also included quotes from Rodgers on Chelsea, where the boss was speaking hopefully about reinvigorating our top four chances. However, he admitted that the game is still going to be a tough one.

“Whatever team they put out, they will be looking to win. We know it will be a tough challenge for us,” he said. “We are four points behind and we have to do everything we can. The players are very motivated.”

In terms of team news, Mamadou Sakho remains unavailable, while Mario Balotelli could return.
