Kolo Toure discusses why he joined Liverpool in 2013

He certainly wasn’t short of offers when he left Manchester City. In fact, Kolo Toure believes he had teams queuing up for his signature during the summer of 2013. However, it was Liverpool who won the race for his signature.

Speaking almost two years on, as his contract with the club comes to an end, Toure remains pleased with his time at Anfield. He’s made 44 appearances in all competitions, figuring mainly as an understudy to the likes of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.

Toure first came to prominence playing for Arsenal, starring in over 300 games in all competitions before joining City in 2009. He won his second Premier League title while playing at the Etihad, while he also added an FA Cup winners medal to his collection.

Now 34, you could be forgiven for thinking that Toure’s Premier League expiration date was fast approaching. However, if he does leave us this summer, the veteran centre-back will go out with some fond memories, as he explained to our official website this week.

He said: “I was at the end of my contract at City and I wanted to still play in the UK, because the way I finished at City for me wasn’t right. I knew that I could keep doing something.

“I received a phone call from [Brendan Rodgers]. For me, when he spoke to me and he told me that he was considering me to come to the club, I was like ‘wow’. To be able to play at Arsenal, City and now Liverpool was amazing and I thank God again.

“I could have maybe gone to Turkey or other places but when Brendan told me to come to Liverpool I was so happy, because I knew I could come here and do something and help this great football club. This was another chance to bounce back. What a perfect club to bounce back for me.”
