John Terry claims Chelsea don’t want guard of honour from Liverpool

Chelsea captain John Terry has urged the Reds not to give his side a guard of honour ahead of today’s game at Stamford Bridge, the first match for our hosts since they clinched the Premier League title last weekend.

The former England international claimed that the experience would be ‘very uncomfortable’, but added that he would graciously accept our decision to applaud them onto the field if we stick with it.

A guard of honour has become a traditional gesture in the Premier League in recent years – a way to congratulate the division’s winners for clinching the title ahead of the final round of fixtures – however, Terry doesn’t enjoy it.

He told the Daily Mirror: “[It would be] very uncomfortable actually. Because they’re fellow professionals and fellow peers, it seems a bit strange for them to be standing out. I think both sides will be a bit uncomfortable.

“They’re a very good side, people like Stevie G (Steven Gerrard) I have a lot of respect for. It just wouldn’t seem right if I’m honest. But if it’s been instructed to them we’ll accept it because we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved but with that same token not being too ungrateful.”

Chelsea won the title with victory over Crystal Palace last weekend. They’ve lost just twice in 35 games so far this season – against Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. They’ve won seven of their last ten games and sit 13 points clear of their nearest challengers, Manchester City and Arsenal.
