The 34-year-old received the ovation as both sets of fans recognised it’d likely be his last at Stamford Bridge. And he marked the event in typical Gerrard fashion, bagging the equaliser, and putting in a battling display which inspired the team to a promising performance.

And Torres – who played at Anfield for three and a half seasons, scoring 65 Premier League goals before his move to Stamford Bridge – posted a photo depicting the moment 79 minutes into the game when the former England captain was replaced by Lucas Leiva.

With a backdrop of Blues fans and backroom staff behind, Jose Mourinho is seen clapping Gerrard off the field in one of the images of the season.

Torres captioned the photo: ‘Yesterday at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea fans show (sic) their respect to the legend Steven Gerrard. Rivalry apart this is what is (sic) football about. So proud to the two clubs I have play (sic) in England. #Respect’
