The 34-year-old was influential in earning a point, scoring the equaliser, and generally putting in a captain’s display in the middle of the park. However, the former England skipper has just two more possible appearances in a Reds shirt before he departs for MLS in the summer.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Souness remains surprised at the decision to let him join LA Galaxy, and feels that, while he may not be the same player that dragged us out of trouble on numerous occasions during his fantastic career, he still has a role to play in the side.

“I know he wouldn’t be the same Steven Gerrard we’ve seen over the last decade – he’s not going to be 90 minutes, not going to be the game-changer he’s been time and time again,” he said.

“Certainly have him on the bench. I think to bring him on he can certainly swing games. He’s shown that today – he got them back into the game,” he added.

Jerome Sinclair became the latest product of the academy to make his full debut, when he was brought on against the Blues, and there a number of the U21 squad edging towards a chance in the first team. The pundit believes that the transition phase, which would involve some of the younger players, would be a much smoother if Gerrard was around.

“I’m a great believer that you cannot have enough senior pros around your dressing room. He certainly is that. They’re the standard bearers and that’s what Steven Gerrard is,” he explained.

“I just can’t understand on any level why you’d allow him to leave the club at this time. A club that’s got a group of young players that might go on and be real players one day,” he added.

As it is though, Gerrard has only two matches left in which to add to his wonderful legacy – at home to Crystal Palace and away to Stoke on the final day of the Premier League season. We wouldn’t bet against him scoring again, which will make it even harder for us to say goodbye.
