Sunday’s draw with Chelsea was an impressive performance against a side that comfortably won the Premier League, but unfortunately, it meant that we now sit six points behind Manchester United with just two games to play. It would now take something very bizarre for us to snatch a place in the top four, and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

According to the Daily Express, the 34-year-old believes that we have much talent in the squad, but that we need to add to it in the summer transfer window if we wish to compete for the title in the future. And the midfielder – who is departing for LA Galaxy after the final two games – admits that we will have to spend some serious money if we hope to reach the table’s summit.

“There is a great core of players here, with terrific potential, and the future is looking alright. But it is important that you try and compete with the giant clubs in the league because they are all going to spend big,” he said.

This season has been a difficult one, especially after the fantastic effort of last year, and Gerrard – our top goalscorer in the league – has suggested that it has been our struggles in front of goal that have cost us, hinting that is the area in which the most improvement is required.

“We lost Luis Suarez, we haven’t had Daniel Sturridge available and it’s been pretty tough,” he added.
