The Daily Mail reported that Rodgers was happy with the options already available to him, despite a tough season.

“He is a young, talented player but we already have four wingers at the club: Raheem Sterling, Jordon Ibe, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic,” he explained.

However, according to the Mail, Marcel Brands, PSV’s sporting director, confirmed that he had been in contact with our board.

“I didn’t speak with Brendan Rodgers. I had contact with Ian Ayre,” he said.

And while it is unclear whether we actually made a bid, Brands does suggest that our injury problems may have influenced our level to commitment to bringing him to the club.

“I know there were some problems with [Daniel] Sturridge, maybe that changed the decision,” Brands said, reported in the Telegraph.

“I don’t know. I’m not in the club of Liverpool. I don’t know what the policies are inside,” he added.

It will be very difficult to find a young player of his quality and goalscoring pedigree. However, while his end product is decent, his fee was large, and his transfer still represents a risk for our bitter rivals.

There is no question that United have got a talented player, but they have also bagged themselves an occasionally frustrating one. After watching the struggles of Angel Di Maria, who now looks a shell of his former self after one year at Old Trafford, for United, it could be deja vu from Depay. Let’s hope so, anyway…
