Steven Gerrard XI – Departing Anfield hero picks his favourite Liverpool teammates

Steven Gerrard will play his final game at Anfield on Saturday, as Liverpool take on Crystal Palace in our penultimate game of the season. With that in mind, this seems like the perfect time to revisit this feature.

Our outgoing captain has played over 700 games for the club, but had little trouble in picking his favourite teammates in an interview with GQ Magazine back in January. You can check out his team below…

GK) Pepe Reina

The Spanish keeper spent almost a decade at Liverpool, making almost 400 appearances. He won the Premier League’s golden glove award on three occasions before joining Bayern Munich last summer.

RB) Glen Johnson

The only member of this team, other than Gerrard himself, still with the club, although he also looks set to leave with his contract expiring at the end of the season. Made his 200th appearance for the club last weekend.

LB) John Arne Riise

Riise became renowned at Anfield for his bursting runs from full-back and his powerful shots. The Norwegian, who is currently playing with APOEL in Cyprus, made over 300 appearances for the Reds, scoring 30 times.

CB) Jamie Carragher

One of only two Liverpool players to feature in more games for the club than Steven Gerrard. He played 737 of them in total, before retiring in 2013. He won 11 major honours and played a crucial role in our Istanbul triumph.

CB) Sami Hyypia

Another integral member of our 2005 Champions League run; the vast majority of Liverpool fans will remember his incredible goal against Juventus. The big Finn is still an incredibly popular figure on Merseyside.

CM) Xabi Alonso

Scored the equaliser against AC Milan, as well a whole host of far more spectacular goals during his five years with the Reds, in which he played 210 times. The Spaniard has since played for both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

CM) Javier Mascherano

The Argentine midfielder played more than 100 times for Liverpool but has arguably only reached his peak in the last couple of years, whilst playing for Barcelona. He was one of the best players at last summer’s World Cup.

AM) Steven Gerrard

He was never going to leave himself out was he… and rightly so. Gerrard has been a wonderful servant for us – the perfect leader both on and off the pitch. Even now, when he’s lost a yard of pace, he can still change games.

ST) Luis Suarez

One of the best players on the planet right now. The Uruguayan scored 82 goals in 133 games during his time with the Reds and has continued that form since moving to Barcelona, netting 24 times thus far in his debut campaign.

ST) Fernando Torres

The Spaniard scored 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool. He went rapidly downhill after leaving Anfield, struggling to produce at Chelsea, Milan or Atletico Madrid. He’s still fondly remembered by most Liverpool fans.

ST) Robbie Fowler

The last great English striker at Liverpool, scoring 128 league goals across two spells with the club. He left us for the second time in 2007. His best years came back in the late 1990s, when he scored 98 times in three seasons.
