Gerrard has just two games remaining as a Liverpool player, ahead of his summer move to LA Galaxy, but Keegan is desperate to see him return to the club in the future.

In quotes taken by the Daily Mirror, he said: “I don’t think there’s any doubt in my mind that Steven Gerrard is the best player of his generation. I gave him his debut for England.

“The sad thing that’s missing on Steven Gerrard’s CV is he’s got hardly any trophies for all he gave Liverpool Football Club and he gave them an awful lot.

“I honestly believe, I’m certain in fact, that if he wants to he will manage Liverpool within 10 years.”

Keegan spent six years at Liverpool as a player, starring in over 200 league games and scoring 68 goals. He won three first division titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup before leaving us for Hamburg in 1977.

He finished his career back in England, playing for Southampton and Newcastle United. He later joined the latter as a manager, twice guiding them to second place in the Premier League. He also coached Fulham, Manchester City and England, prior to a second spell with the Magpies in 2008 – his last job in management.
