We came agonisingly close to a maiden Premier League title last season, with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge scoring more than 50 goals between them. However, Suarez’s resulting move to Barcelona and Sturridge’s injury problems have frustratingly stunted our progress this year.

Gerrard, who joins LA Galaxy next month, remains eager to see his boyhood club succeed in his absence and has told Rodgers that he must sign at least one marquee player this summer to reinvigorate our title challenge.

In quotes taken by the Daily Mirror, he said: “To get into the top four, you are going to need a striker who can score 25-30 goals a season. That is just the way it is. That is where we came short this season.”

The Reds have been regularly linked with Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke and Burnley’s Danny Ings in recent weeks (via the Daily Mirror), although the pair have scored just 24 times between them so far this season, suggesting our captain might have his eye on someone else.

To be fair – we’d like to think we can do better than the aforementioned pair, too.
