The 34-year-old has one more game left as a Red before he leaves for LA Galaxy, and has already played his final game at Anfield – where he received an incredible reception as fans flocked to show their appreciation for his 17 year career.

Following our difficult season, there had been suggestions – and some hopes – that the midfielder could come back in the future. He has produced moments of magic this season that have reminded us why he is held in such high regard, and led some to believe that his departure is premature and that he still has a lot to offer.

According to the Daily Express, the former England captain is against the idea of coming back in a playing capacity, and hopes that the club will be in a position where we don’t need him back.

“I wanted to say goodbye in a proper way – the only way I’d ever come back would be an emergency situation, but I hope I’m not needed come the winter,” he said.

He did also reveal that he is hopeful of returning in a coaching role in the future, but has warned that sentiment shouldn’t play any part if he is to come back.

“You have to be good enough. This is a big club and can be brutal at times,” he added.

“I’m trying to go through the coaching badges and it’s a bridge I will cross in a couple of years.”
