The 20-year-old’s current contract expires in 2017, and it was believed that he would soon be negotiating a new deal in the summer, having put talks to the background during the season. He denied that his rejection of a new £100,000 a week contract was about wanting more money, and was because of footballing-related reasons, during an interview with BBC Sport last month.

However, now that the season is practically over, he has now decided that his future lies elsewhere, according to BBC Sport, and will tell the club’s hierarchy as such when they meet two days before the final fixture of the campaign.

The winger has done a very good job of alienating himself from the club this season. Firstly, rejecting the lucrative contract offer – £65,000 a week more than his current deal – and then, taking part in an interview unsanctioned by Liverpool to explain the decision.

With Sterling still having two years on his contract, Liverpool are still somewhat in a position of power. We don’t have to sell at a reduced price as we might with just a year remaining, and we could conceivably tell Sterling he just needs to knuckle down – as we did with Suarez the summer before he left for Barca.

If we did that though, Sterling will need to work hard to win back the fans – he’s been misguided in his approach thus far, and it’s fair to say he’s been ill-advised.

Based on comments on our own site, Sterling’s not making himself the most popular player at Anfield. If this is goodbye, it’ll be a great shame, for there’s wonderful potential just waiting to be fully unlocked.
