The Liverpool Echo believe that the Reds are among the leaders in the chase for the Belgian’s signature, with Brendan Rodgers making the powerful forward his number one transfer target.

We’re in desperate need of some fresh inspiration up front ahead of our next campaign, with Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have managed just eight league goals between them this year.

Benteke has matched that tally in the last seven games alone, and has netted 15 times throughout the full campaign.

The 24-year-old has also been linked to Premier League champions Chelsea (via the Mirror), who need cover for Diego Costa, but we’re far more likely to offer him the first-team football that he’d demand.

However, Sherwood has moved to end any such speculation by claiming that he’s going to stay put: “Christian is only a young man but he’s very mature in the way he behaves,” he said. “I think he’s handled the situation well.

“I have no reason to believe he wants to seek employment elsewhere. He seems to be very happy here and this morning, at training, he was smiling.

“He knows there are big games coming up in Sunday and the cup final and I think he wants to be at this football club. I’m convinced of that.”
