The midfielder is out of contract in the summer, and while the club are keen to extend his deal, he has decided that his future is at Anfield.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed his best season since his move to the Etihad five years ago, and has therefore earned the right to ask why Manuel Pellegrini will not give him a run in his preferred position of centre midfield.

His experience – having won the Premier League on two occasions and collecting 53 England caps – makes him one of the best options available to fill the hole that Steven Gerrard will leave behind.

He does not boast the same level of quality as our departing skipper, however he will guarantee a consistent performance that allows some of the exciting members of the side to go forward without the pressure of wondering what will happen if they lose the ball high up the pitch.

This season, we have also seen our chances of reaching the top four severely hampered by injuries all over the side. His versatility has seen him play everywhere from full-back to striker, and do it to a solid level each time.

Adding the depth that Milner will bring for the fee he will cost, will allow Brendan Rodgers to spend the money available to him on the marquee signings that we are hoping for.
