Ranking Brendan Rodgers’ five best Liverpool signings…

Brendan Rodgers continues to receive much of the criticism. Following the Stoke humiliation, thoughts have now turned intently to the summer, as we wait to see whether the mistakes made during last year’s transfer window have been learnt from.

The acquisitions of the likes of Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren – who together cost us £36m – have meant that any future dealings made whilst Rodgers remains will come under intense scrutiny, until the club’s hierarchy can be trusted to make smart signings.

Here are five examples when it has been proved that Brendan and the board can get it right…

5) Emre Can

The 21-year-old stalwart moved from Bayer Levekusen last year for nearly £10m. As Rodgers tinkers with his tactics, the German has proved his valuable versatility in both defence and midfield. And while he may have looked tired in the last couple of games, the speed at which he’s adapted to life in England is incredibly encouraging. A future in midfield hopefully awaits.

4) Simon Mignolet

The Belgian may have taken a bit of time to find some consistency, but now you would argue that few goalkeepers are more reliable. The former Sunderland man came close to the Golden Glove, and probably only needs a new backup ahead of next season.

3) Daniel Sturridge

Last season, Daniel Sturridge – along with Luis Suarez – was one of the league’s most ruthless forwards. Unfortunately, injuries have prevented him finding his best form this term. But if he can get the treatment he needs during the summer, and find his goalscoring boots again, he has the ability to lead the line for a title-winning side… He’d be rated higher on this list if it wasn’t for his campaign ruining injuries.

2) Mamadou Sakho

Perhaps weighed down by the large fee required to bring him in from Paris Saint-Germain, the defender had looked like the pressure had got to him at times. However, when fit, he’s arguably our best defender, and at just 25-years-old, his best years as a centre-back are ahead of him. On the ball he looks assured and he is starting to develop into a leader, too.

1) Philippe Coutinho

His performances this season especially make £8.5m look an absolute steal for the Brazilian international. He has been our most creative and exciting player this term, and has backed it up with some stunning goals along the way. He was rewarded for his efforts by being voted to make the PFA Team of the Year – and he’s arguably the club’s biggest shining light ahead of what could be a defining summer transfer window. Thank goodness he renewed his contract earlier in the season…
