Liverpool’s team of the season – No room for Joe Allen; Raheem Sterling up front

The Premier League season has come to an end. For the most part, it’s been a campaign to forget for us Liverpool fans, despite the success we enjoyed during the early part of 2015, which culminated in a 13 game unbeaten run.

There were a handful of memorable performances – including the wins against Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton – but unfortunately those wins only provided the first couple of names on this team-sheet – with the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Simon Mignolet the only clear-cut choices for our team of the season.

Who else made our side? You can see it in full below and find out…

GK) Simon Mignolet

Much improved during the second-half of the season and back to the goalkeeper we know and love. He finished the campaign with 14 Premier League clean-sheets, a fantastic effort considering his issues earlier in the year.

RCB) Emre Can

Ended the season with a nightmare performance against Stoke City but his season as a whole has to be viewed as a success. Considering that he has been regularly moved around and played out of position he’s done a great job.

CB) Martin Skrtel

Just the one goal for the Slovakian this season, which was a bit of a disappointment considering how prolific he was last year. Thankfully, he’s been as solid as ever defensively and can definitely hold his head high this summer.

LCB) Mamadou Sakho

It’s been a hit and miss season for the Frenchman but he edges out Dejan Lovren for the third centre-back spot. That’s mainly down to the role he played in our unbeaten run earlier this year, when he was key in this position.

RM) Jordon Ibe

The right-hand side has been a constant problem position for us all season long. Nonetheless, we’ve found a gem in Jordon Ibe, who returned to us from his loan spell at Derby County earlier this year and marked himself down as one for the future.

CM) Steven Gerrard

Despite all of the speculation surrounding his future and the build-up to his departure, Gerrard has quietly had another solid year, scoring 13 goals in all competitions and ending the season as our top scorer. Even when not at his best, he’s still massively important.

CM) Jordan Henderson

Our captain-to-be has enjoyed a fine season at the heart of our midfield. He’s scored a couple of screamers – against Manchester City and Burnley – and proved that life after Steven Gerrard might actually be possible.

LM) Alberto Moreno

It’s been an up and down season for the Spaniard, who will want to forget a couple of major errors in big games, but should otherwise look back on this season as a decent debut in English football. He has something to build on.

RAM) Adam Lallana

His inclusion really emphasises our problems at the top end of the pitch. Lallana has seriously struggled with injuries and fitness problems this season but he’s done enough to make the cut, with his six goals in 41 games.

LAM) Philippe Coutinho

Our player of the season has been, quite simply, a revelation. You have to wonder where we’d be without his creativity and wizardry in the middle of the park. He’s become a firm fan favourite around who the team could be built for years to come.

ST) Raheem Sterling

It’s been a difficult couple of months for the youngster but the vast majority of Liverpool supporters should be able to remember the positive work he did for us during the first-half of the year. His 11 goals in all competitions represent a solid return.
