The poll – conducted by the Daily Mirror – is unlikely to lift Rodgers’ mood, following a very difficult couple of weeks. However, it is hardly surprising, given the result on the final day of the Premier League season, that the levels of discontent have reached an all-time high since the Northern Irishman arrived three years ago.

Often the managers become the scapegoats for tough times endured on the pitch simply because their removal represents the biggest impact possible from one single decision from the board, whether they are to blame or not. Following our defeat to Stoke, the finger of blame has been pointed rigidly at the manager and those above him. But, as the board are unlikely to disappear any time soon, only Rodgers’ dismissal may appease disgruntled fans.

However, everything being levelled at Rodgers’ door is not only unfair, but also potentially dangerous. Jurgen Klopp has been a tremendous manager in Germany, and has done wonders with Borussia Dortmund. But, he is yet to manage in the Premier League, and if he does find himself under the same constraints that Rodgers has had to deal with, there is no guarantee that the messiah has come among us.
