New York City look set to finally end whatever small hopes we had of signing iconic Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo this summer. Reports in Spain, most notably from AS, suggest that the Juventus star is set to move to the MLS.

If he does indeed make the move to New York, he could join former Chelsea and Manchester City star Frank Lampard, who will complete his move to the States this summer after a year at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool had supposedly enquired over the availability of Pirlo, with sources such as the Daily Mail suggesting that the 36-year-old could be set for a short-term deal to replace our departing captain, Steven Gerrard.

However, with the Reds having today sealed a deal to sign James Milner on a free transfer from Manchester City (via our official website), you have to think that we’ll now be looking elsewhere for new signings – most notably up front, at right-back and in goal.

If we do bring in another midfielder this summer it’s likely to be a younger player more in line with Brendan Rodgers’ usual transfer policy. Inter Milan’s Mateo Kovacic is perhaps the most likely man to meet those expectations – at least according to reports in Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia).
