Analysing six Champions League finalists who Liverpool should move for this summer

We hate to be the barer of bad news, but we’re not going to sign all six of these players this summer. Hopefully you knew that bid already. However, we could get one of them, and doing so would inspire a fresh wave of optimism among our supporters as we step-up our preparations for the new season.

All of these players listed below have already been linked to Liverpool in some form or another – although we’re aware that the Express, the Star and The Metro aren’t the most reliable of sources.

This news has got out there somewhere and that’s left us feeling hopeful about the possibility of us getting one of those ‘marquee arrivals’ Brendan Rodgers was talking about back in April (via The Telegraph).

Who of these would you take in a dream scenario?

Carlos Tevez (Juventus)

Why it could work: The Argentine is only under contract until the end of next season and has already confirmed that he doesn’t intend to extend his stay any further (via ESPN). Juventus are more likely to sell this year rather than let him go for nothing next summer.

How he could fit: We’re in desperate need or a striker and Tevez has scored regularly wherever he’s been. He comes with some baggage but if we can keep him happy then there’s no reason why he can’t be a success.

What do the papers say: The Metro claim a deal is close and will be completed after tonight’s Champions League final… yeah, so that’s clearly rubbish, but we’ll keep our hopes up regardless.

Martin Montoya (Barcelona)

Why it could work: The full-back doesn’t get the game-time he deserves at the Camp Nou – although his future is somewhat dependent on the fate of Dani Alves, who is out of contract this summer. If a club of our calibre came knocking then he could find an offer hard to turn down.

How he could fit: With Glen Johnson gone and Jon Flanagan out for the foreseeable future through injury we’re in desperate need of a right-back, and Montoya would be preferable to youngsters Andre Wisdom and Javier Manquillo. Did someone say the next Arbeloa?

What do the papers say: The Daily Mail suggest we’re monitoring the situation, which is probably fairly truthful. We’ve clearly got our eye on a number of different full-back options and this is just one of them.

Angelo Ogbonna (Juventus)

Why it could work: A relative unknown compared to the other names on this list. He could jump at the opportunity to win more first-team opportunities at Anfield. He’ll likely play tonight due to the injury to Giorgio Chiellini… Luis Suarez must be devastated!

How he could fit: We all know about Dejan Lovren’s problems and this towering Italian, who is also capable of playing at left-back, could add some real strength in depth to our squad.

What do the papers say: The Metro believe that our scouts will be out in force tonight to keep an eye on him. In all fairness, every major European club going will probably have someone in attendance in Berlin.

Andrea Pirlo (Juventus)

Why it could work: Pirlo has never played outside of Italy and this is really his last chance to have a crack at another major European league before he retires. If he wins tonight, there won’t be anything left to achieve with Juventus.

How he could fit: We’ve added James Milner to our squad but we still look a little short in midfield. In a squad that lacks experience and proven quality at the top level this Italian veteran could be the ideal short-term addition.

What do the papers say: The Daily Express claim we have a fight on our hands if we want to get a deal done, with Pirlo also attracting interest from the MLS.

Pedro (Barcelona)

Why it could work: He might just have signed a new contract but he’s still down the pecking order at the Camp Nou and will probably have to make do with a spot on the bench tonight. To be fair, it must be hard to compete with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez. Could missing out tonight make him reconsider his future?

How he could fit: A top class forward who would add an extra dimension to our attack. If Raheem Sterling is to leave us this summer then the World Cup winner would be the ideal replacement.

What do the papers say: Unsurprisingly, the Daily Mirror is unsure on this one following his new deal.

Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Why it could work: Juventus are blessed with a host of world class midfielders. The rumours about Vidal’s potential departure refuse to go away and it seems as if the Chilean really could be on his way.

How he could fit: He’d be the dream replacement for the departing Steven Gerrard. The prospect of combining him with Jordan Henderson and James Milner would make us look a real force again.

What do the papers say: The Daily Star aren’t impressed – but well know that by tomorrow they’ll probably have changed their mind. This one seems optimistic but it’s something that’s worth keeping an eye on.
