Umtiti is a 21-year-old French youth team international who currently plays for Lyon. He’s a centre-back by trade but is also capable of playing on the left – suggesting he could provide competition for Alberto Moreno.

The Star believe that £11m would be enough to secure his signature, despite Real Madrid and Inter Milan also being prepared to offer him a move. Umtiti’s versatility is believe to appeal to Brendan Rodgers, as he frets over the future of his defence.

Glen Johnson has already gone, while Jon Flanagan will miss much of next campaign through injury. Jose Enrique has been told to find a new club (via the Mail) and doubt remains over the long-term future of Dejan Lovren, who endured a difficult first-season on Merseyside.

Kolo Toure has signed a new deal but will likely be used more for his experience in the dressing room than on the pitch considering his age, while youngsters Javi Manquillo and Andre Wisdom are unlikely to be regulars.

With Martin Skrtel also having turned down a new contract – say the Star – the arrival of Umtiti could provide Rodgers with a much needed back-up option, who also has the abilities to one day reach the first-team.

We’re also believed to be pursuing a right-back, with both Nathaniel Clyne and Kieran Trippier linked with us by The Times (via the Daily Mirror).
