Luiz Henrique Pompeo said: “The departure from Porto will be a reality in the coming days. Just the details are missing.

“Porto will receive the full €35million (£24.7million) of his release clause. Jackson will continue in a top European club.”

So where’s he going…?

Ourselves and Arsenal have been consistently linked with Martinez’s services (like here in the Metro), but the latest reports suggest that Arsene Wenger’s side are the favourites for his signature.

Martinez is 28-years-old, and while the £24.7m is steep, it’s probably worth it – because he’s lethal in front of goal, and has proven as much in the Champions League as well.

Since arriving from Mexico in 2012, he’s produced three exceptional seasons – scoring 31, then 29 and finally 32 goals this time around.

He has Champions League pedigree too, scoring eight times in this season’s competition.

While the newly arriving Danny Ings and Divock Origi have potential, we need stellar strikers to solve our considerable goalscoring difficulties.

Sadly though, we don’t think Martinez will arrive. Let’s hope a top alternative is found.
