Cringe! Simon Mignolet attempts awful pun to advertise company on Twitter

Footballers love their sponsors. After all, they pay a large percentage of their wage packet. But unfortunately, not everyone is David Beckham or Cristiano Ronaldo, who can pick and choose their backers because the offers will keep rolling in regardless.

Nonetheless, you’d think poor Simon Mignolet could have been spared such a cringeworthy tweet by the people at First Rate FX – the self-proclaimed ‘currency specialists’ – who deal in monetary exchanges from their base in Canary Wharf, London.

Here’s the offending message:

Unsurprisingly, the Twitter ‘trolls’ were quick to take advantage of such an awful promotion. Liam Edwards took just minutes to reply with “you don’t save anything”, while ‘The Welsh Manc’ said: “Shame you can’t do the same on the pitch.”

Despite the suggestions to the contrary, the Belgian goalkeeper was one of our best players last season, finishing second in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Glove award, finishing only behind Manchester City’s Joe Hart.

He was particularly impressive during the second-half of the season, after reclaiming his place in the team from Brad Jones, and proceeded to play a starring role in our 13 game unbeaten run during the first few months of 2015.
