According to the Premier League’s official website, he described Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman as the best players he’s played with, and they unsurprisingly feature among eight former Liverpool greats in the list below…

GK) David James

James was the goalkeeper during the vast majority of Fowler’s time at Liverpool, although he also could have gone with Pepe Reina, who he played with during his second spell at Anfield. James played more than 200 times for us in the league and has since enjoyed a decent career both at home and abroad.

RCB) Rio Ferdinand

He might be better known for his time at Manchester United but Fowler and Ferdinand were once teammates together at Leeds United. Rio played 54 times for Leeds before making the move to Old Trafford in 2002. His popularity on Merseyside has been steadily decreasing ever since.

CB) Jonathan Woodgate

Another Leeds star – he clearly didn’t fancy his defenders at Liverpool – Woodgate played more than 100 league games for the club before moving to Newcastle. From there he went to Real Madrid where injuries started to get the better of him. He’s still playing and is now with Middlesbrough.

LCB) Jamie Carragher

This was a must-pick surely. The veteran of over 700 games for the Reds and someone who would have played with Fowler during both his spells at the club. There haven’t been many better defenders at any Premier League club over the last 25 years than Jamie.

RWB) Rob Jones

Jones’ promising career was unfortunately cut short by injury and he was forced to retire at just 28. Nonetheless, he can look back on more than 200 games for Liverpool, who he joined from Crewe in 1991. A solid choice down the right-hand side.

CM) John Barnes

Fowler would have only been a teenager when Barnes left Liverpool in 1997. The legendary midfielder eventually called it a day three years later but his influence obviously made its impact on Robbie. Barnes played more than 300 league games for us, scoring 84 goals.

CM) Steven Gerrard

The greatest of them all. Gerrard has only this year left Liverpool, joining LA Galaxy. Fowler will have only mostly played with a very young Gerrard, when he was still learning his trade, although his 18 month second spell at Anfield will have given him a great insight into our iconic midfielder at his peak.

LWB) Jason McAteer

The versatile midfielder was always a solid performer for the Reds, having arrived at Anfield off the back of some impressive performances for the Republic of Ireland. He played exactly 100 Premier League games for us, scoring three goals in the process. He joined Blackburn in 1999.

AM) Steve McManaman

Another member of the ‘Spice Boys’ side that fell short of expectations. Macca rarely let us down though, he played more than 250 league games and scored 46 goals. However, he arguably hit his peak after moving to Real Madrid, where he won La Liga twice and claimed two Champions League titles in three years.

ST) Ian Rush

Liverpool’s greatest ever striker. Like Barnes, Fowler won’t have seen much of Rush as a teammate, although he clearly took great inspiration from the incredible Welshman. Rush scored more than 200 league goals during two spells at Anfield and won 18 major honours.

ST) Mark Viduka

The Australian once scored all four goals for Leeds in a 4-3 win over Liverpool at Elland Road. However, you have to think that Fowler had better strike partners during his career. Nonetheless, Viduka makes the cut, having scored 92 goals during his nine year Premier League career.
