World’s 20 most valuable players named by CIES – Two Liverpool aces feature, with Coutinho 17th

We got you talking with this list of the world’s most valuable players, which were decided by CIES. The calculations from the Football Observatory were based on ability, age, contract length and marketability.

The list sees Liverpool’s own Philippe Coutinho ranked in 17th place, with a price of €50-55m, while Raheem Sterling ranks seventh at €73-78m. Also included are Chelsea quintet Oscar, Thibaut Courtois, Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane. No prizes for guessing who tops the list…

Liverpool to offer clever swap-deal for priority midfield target

One of the many, many Mateo Kovacic stories that we’ve covered over the last seven days was this piece from Gazzeta dello Sport. They claimed that we’d attempt to swap the Croatian midfielder for Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, who is of course likely to be on his way out after another difficult season on Merseyside.

The report claims we’ve already agreed personal terms with the young Croatian midfielder, but that a deal is stalling because Inter are playing hardball over the transfer fee. But adding Borini (or midfielder Lucas, as the report also suggests…) to the deal might convince the Serie A giants into doing business.

The five ‘marquee’ strikers linked to Liverpool, with fans crying out for a huge name

Despite signing Danny Ings at the start of the week, most Liverpool fans are still desperate to see us sign another front man, preferably a big name that would be likely to make an immediate impact at Anfield.

We put together a list of our five admittedly hopeful candidates. Could any of these deals actually come off? Carlos Tevez is perhaps the most likely. He’s out of contract at the end of next season and Juventus are seemingly trying to flog him now rather thank risk losing him for nothing in twelve months time.

Meet the Legends: Liverpool name 19 man squad for Sunday’s Real Madrid game

We put together this list of former Liverpool stars who were due to face Real Madrid on Sunday in a Legends game. A lot of you took up the opportunity for a trip down memory lane and read through our squad in full.

Unfortunately, the Reds fell to defeat in Spain. Harry Kewell and Michael Owen scored for the visitors but a Roberto Carlos brace and strikes from Jose Amavisca and Ivan Perez sealed victory for our hosts. Nonetheless, it was a great game that was played in the right spirit by both sides and raised a lot of money for our respective charities.

Rating every Liverpool transfer window of the 21st century – Why the crop of 2007 must be matched

With all the talk currently focusing on the upcoming transfer window, we decided to look back at each and every transfer performance we’ve had since the turn of the century. We were surprised by a lot of the results, with a number of players we could scarcely remember both signing and invariably leaving once again.

We gave each year’s performance a rating out of ten and then concluded the piece by trying to work out where this summer’s crop of stars might rank.
