Mirror misread Italian paper & claim we’ve agreed €22.6m fee for Mateo Kovacic

This is just proof that tabloids will print anything to sell copies and get website hits without really doing their research properly…

And it also goes some way in explaining how transfer rumours develop and grow – seemingly out of nothing.

We got a little excited this morning upon reading that we’d agree a fee for Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic, but the Mirror have actually misquoted and misunderstood the Italian source from which they draw the story…

Upon tracking down the article in Tuttosport, we realised that the Italian story actually only claims that Inter Milan would accept an offer of around €22.6m for the Croatian powerhouse, and not that they already have.

There is no quote that suggests we’ve even made a bid of this amount yet.

In fact – Tuttosport cite Croatian newspaper Jutarni List as their source – who in turn claim they’re getting their information from the ‘British press’…

So really – the story just travels around Europe and is rehashed and republished on a daily basis – but there’s no concrete information to suggest a bid has even been made yet.

Still – it’s clear we’re interested in Kovacic – and we should be. He’s an excellent, powerful young central midfielder, and would significantly boost this area of our squad.

Let’s hope we can eventually agree a deal for the 21-year-old, and when there’s some solid information to suggest as much, we’ll let you know!
