According to the Mirror, Liverpool are on the verge of wrapping up a deal for Joe Gomez, Charlton Atheltic’s supremely talented teenage central defender.
We’ve triggered Gomez’s £3.5m release clause according to the report, and the 18-year-old will travel to Merseyside on Friday to thrash our personal terms and undergo a medical.
We’re pretty pleased with the Gomez signing, although we can’t imagine we’ll see him representing the first-team any time soon. He’s England Under-19s’ best defender, and the fact he was a regular in the physically robust Championship last season proves his mettle.
It’ll be best for his development, should we finalise the deal, for him to be sent back on loan to the Championship – perhaps even straight back to the Valley…
Brendan Rodgers proved with Jordon Ibe earlier this calendar year that if a young player is doing well enough in that particular league, he’s not afraid to bring them back to Liverpool and give them a proper Premier League chance.
