Karol Csonto, the agent of our long-serving Slovakian centre-half Martin Skrtel, claims that his client has been in contact with Serie A giants Inter Milan.

The report in the Echo recognises that the 30-year-old has already turned down an unacceptable contract renewal offer from us, but importantly, claims that the defender wants to stay at Liverpool…

“I will confess that the links between Inter and Skrtel were not just rumours,” his agent began…

“There was very real interest from Inter towards Martin, but then the matter did not go forward. There was definitely contact.

“The player considered his future and at the end of the day decided to stay at Liverpool. At this stage, I can say a contract renewal is probable.”

Fans have long been split over Skrtel, and when Brendan Rodgers first joined the club, he sat behind Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher in our defensive pecking order.

In the past two seasons though he’s really established himself as our central defensive leader, and now – the likes of Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren are competing to start alongside him.

With Steven Gerrard departing, we need to keep experienced heads like Skrtel at all costs – and should offer him a contract which reflects his loyalty and standing at the club.

If Kolo Toure was offered a suitable deal to stay at the club, then Skrtel, now entering his peak years as a centre-back, certainly should be.

Let’s hope they get it sorted.
