Martin Skrtel slams contract hoax – defender has not signed new deal after all

The Daily Mail reported yesterday that Martin Skrtel had signed a new deal, but they were duped by a fake Facebook profile which claimed a deal was done.

According to the Daily Express – who quote both the defender and his agent – this is definitely NOT the case.

As the source states, Skrtel has held talks with Liverpool over an extension. However, he remains unimpressed with the offer which is currently on the table, branding the deal as ‘unacceptable’.

The 30-year-old has since been on international duty with Slovakia and hasn’t had the chance for further discussion with the club.

Asked whether he had indeed renewed his deal, Skrtel responded angrily: “I have my own profile on Facebook. I use it for communication with my fans and I operate it through the agency Stars and Friends.

“I strongly disavow the profile on which the false information was published. I have not created the profile and I do not have a clue who the administrator is.”

The Express believe that Skrtel is unhappy about a specific clause in the new deal which offers bonuses coinciding with the amount of time he spends on the pitch. As a result of this, his initial wage has been reduced, something which he feels is unfair.

Of course, he has a point. The veteran centre-back has been an integral player for us over the last couple of seasons and is now closing in on 300 games for the club. While such a deal might be appropriate for someone like Kolo Toure, this seems a rather unfair way to treat one of our most loyal servants.

His agent Karol Csonto agrees, adding: “At the moment I can confirm that we are negotiating the matter with the club, but we have not signed the contract yet. We will inform fans and media when it happens.”
