Kewell weighs in on Milner debate, having played with our new signing at Leeds

It seems a little crazy to think that the Harry Kewell of Leeds used to train and play with James Milner, who made first debut for them aged 16-years-old…

But as a result, few are perhaps better equipped than the Australian to discuss what Milner could bring to Anfield, having himself of course represented both clubs.

“I think it’s a good signing,” Kewell told Liverpoolfc.com. “James obviously came through when I was at Leeds and I always knew he had that kind of talent.

“He’s got that grit between his teeth, first and foremost. He’s got that hunger and desire.

“Obviously when he left Leeds he played for a few other teams and he did well, but he didn’t get to the potential that I thought he could have done.

“But then going to Manchester City, he kind of just rose up that little bit more and put his name back up there to being one of the best England players again.

“For Liverpool to snatch him up, I think he’s going to do wonders.

“I think he can come in there and get respect straight away off the players because he’s been there and done it – he’s won titles, so he knows what it takes. I think that’s a smart signing by Brendan to bring in, to hopefully help the team.”

Kewell indeed highlights Milner’s grit and work-rate as key attributes, but it’s important for us to remember his quality, too. Playing in a number of positions with Manchester City last term, the England international scored and made goals.

He was the first signing of our summer, and with Danny Ings and Adam Bogdan following him, he remains the most exciting to date.

Milner will provide us as option in central midfield now Steven Gerrard’s gone, but also on either flank in a more marauding role.

We all had huge hopes for Kewell when he arrived, but injuries stopped him from fulfilling his potential. Milner is a fitter, physically stronger player though, and we hope that he can maximise himself for us as he has done during his career so far.
