Tony Barrett confirms Liverpool want to hijack Man United’s Roberto Firmino deal

We’d absolutely love this to be true, and would say that as football journalists go, Tony Barrett from the Times is one of the most reliable…

He wrote in a piece published late last night that we’re going to do our utmost to beat Manchester United to the signature of Hoffenheim’s Brazilian international attacking midfielder Roberto Firmino.

Another report in the Mirror confirm that United were closing in on a £13.1m deal, but reckon that we’re trying to pip them to the deal with a £20m offer that would tempt the Bundesliga side more than the offer on the table from Louis van Gaal’s side.

Barrett claims that our move for Firmino is not dependant on Raheem Sterling being sold, but that the club is making contingency plans with Manchester City ramping up their interest and offers for the wantaway 20-year-old’s services.

Firmino is just the type of player we need this summer. His goalscoring record from midfield is wonderful – 49 in 153 for the Germans – and he’s capable of playing as a playmaker or a centre-forward. At 23-years-old, he has the potential to be anything he wants to be, and is a key member of the Brazil side currently playing at the Copa America.

His agent has confirmed his client is moving to England this summer (via Sky Sports), and with United already having an abundance of players competing for the second striker role, we hope our offer of guaranteed first-team football could tempt him.
