Bayern Munich midfielder lauds ‘extraordinary’ Emre Can

Emre Can’s fellow prodigal midfielder Pierre Højbjerg has lauded his former youth team-mate, following our young German’s breathtaking performance against Denmark in the European Under-21 Championships, reports UEFA.

Can produced a wonderful assist for Kevin Volland which helped Germany defeat Højbjerg’s Danes 3-0, and set themselves up for qualification to the semis.

“He has his own style,” began Pierre Højbjerg, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Augsburg and has already won seven caps for the Denmark senior team.

“You cannot compare him with Ballack or Gerrard,” he continued.

“He’s a sublime footballer and there is nothing he can’t do. His physique and his passing game are extraordinary, he also reads the game very well. You just have to look at how he established himself at Liverpool. And he’s done it at a very young age, so these experiences will really pay off one day.”

The pair used to play together for Bayern Munich’s second team, but while Højbjerg decided to stay and progress into Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, Can left for Bayern Leverkusen and then Liverpool – and we’re mighty glad he did.

At the Euro Under-21s, Can’s been one of the standout players so far from a central midfield position, which has increased the cries for him to be deployed in the role next season for us.

He’s got all the attributes to do so, of course. Not only is he a huge physical presence, but he works tirelessly, and has the skills to create opportunities for his team-mates.

With Steven Gerrard departing, Can will likely get more chances in his natural position, and judging by his performances for Germany Under-21s, he’s set to take any opportunity with bothy hands.
