‘Liverpool interested’ in 25-year-old Tunisian centre-back, claims his agent

The latest player linked to Liverpool is 25-year-old Tunisian Aymen Abdennour, who currently plies his trade for Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.

The player’s agent claimed that Liverpool, along with a whole host of European giants, are chasing his client’s services.

Abdennour was superb during Monaco’s Champions League run in 2014/15 and was ever-present in their Ligue 1 campaign, too.

“There are lots of big clubs interested in Abdennour”, the agent told FootMercato.net, reported in the Echo.

“There are clubs that have approached us and will make contact with Monaco.

“There is AC Milan, Inter, Barca and Liverpool.

“Juventus, they have seen Monaco.

“Other clubs, Inter Milan and AC Milan, will make an offer.

“I do not think Monaco will oppose Aymen’s departure.”

For us, this seems like agent guff, and here’s why.

We already have Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and last summer’s £20m signing Dejan Lovren competing for the central defensive spots, while Tiago Ilori has returned from a loan spell and we’ve just signed Joe Gomez from Charlton.

If that wasn’t enough, Kolo Toure has extended his contract, meaning we really should be spending our limited budget on positions we most need to strengthen, rather than further clogging up the centre-back position.

It’s not uncommon for agents to talk up their clients, but the list of clubs Abdennour’s agent claims are circling is more befitting of a truly world-class defender, and not a little known Ligue 1 centre-half.

We’d take this rumour with a pinch of salt, if you were not already.
