So exactly who is our new man? In the list below, we detail all that you need to know about the exciting attacking player, who will hopefully help lead us to glory next season!
Basic Information:
- Firmino, whose full name is Roberto Firmino Barbosa de Oliveira, was born in Maceio, Brazil, on 2 October 1991 – making him 23-years-old.
- He stands just short of 6 ft in height. He is very strong with the ball at his feet and can use his height to his advantage in order to muscle his way past opponents.
- He’s an attacking midfielder by trade. However, he also likes to drift into wide positions and then cut in off the flank in order to deliver a killer pass or shoot from the edge of the area. He has also been utilised as a central striker.
Club Career:
- He started his career with Brazilian side Figueirense. After coming through their youth set-up, he made his professional debut in October 2009, shortly after his 18th birthday. He scored eight goals that season and helped his team earn promotion back to Brazil’s first division.
- His performances encouraged German side 1899 Hoffenheim to sign him in January 2011. He scored three goals in his first half a season and continued to improve from there. He netted seven in each of the next two campaigns before scoring an impressive 22 during the 2013-14 season.
- He struck ten times in all competitions last season and was given the second highest performance rating by WhoScored for his efforts during the campaign. Only Kevin De Bruyne scored higher.
International Career:
- Firmino received his first call-up to the Brazilian national team in October 2014. He scored his first goal on his second appearance, the winner in a friendly against Austria.
- He’s since appeared nine times and scored four goals – striking in friendlies against Chile and Honduras, both winners in 1-0 victories, and grabbing the decisive second goal against Venezuela in the Copa America.
- He has quickly established himself as an important part of Dunga’s squad and is regularly used in a false nine role, with Neymar playing wide of him.
Fun Facts:
- Firmino will become the sixth Brazilian player to pull on a Liverpool shirt. The other five are Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Leiva, Fabio Aurelio, Diego Cavalieri and Doni.
- Liverpool’s latest signing also boasts a clean injury record, having featured in 33 of Hoffenheim’s 34 league fixtures each season for the last three years.
