The Reds are reportedly eyeing up a move for AS Monaco centre-back Aymen Abdennour, should Martin Skrtel leave this summer. As the Daily Mirror report, the Slovakian is struggling to agree terms on a new contract, and the Tunisian international is viewed as the ideal replacement.

Earlier this month, Skrtel rejected the offer of a new deal to remain at Anfield – despite the Mirror insisting that he wants to stay. As Sky Sports report, the 30-year-old was unimpressed with a specific clause in the contract that would require him to play a minimum number of matches to earn his full wage.

Meanwhile, Abdelkader Jilani, the agent of Abdennour, has already revealed Liverpool’s apparent interest in the player.

He said, in quotes taken by the Mirror: “There are clubs who have approached us and who will enter into contact with Monaco. There is AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Liverpool. I don’t think that Monaco will prevent Aymen from leaving.”

The 25-year-old only joined the French club last summer, after initially impressing during a loan spell, but the club’s continuing issues with Financial Fair Play – reported by Sky Sports – could convince them to part with one of their prize assets.

The former Toulouse and Werder Bremen player featured 26 times for Monaco in all competitions last season, helping them reach the last eight of the Champions League and finish third in the top French division.
