Liverpool’s top ten right-backs of all-time: Reds royalty could prove tough act to follow

Nathaniel Clyne looks all set to become Liverpool’s sixth signing of the summer. The full-back, who has been in fine form since Southampton’s promotion to the Premier League in 2012, will join the Reds in a £12.5m move.

The Reds have been blessed with a number of fine full-backs over the years, so while we’re all excited about the possibility of seeing Clyne in a Liverpool shirt – something which The Guardian thinks is a near certainty – it’s worth bearing in mind the quality which we’ll be hoping he can live up to.

How many of these ten players can you remember taking the pitch at Anfield…

10) Jason McAteer

An attacking full-back who could also play in midfield. He played exactly 100 Premier League games for us during the mid-1990s, prior to joining Blackburn Rovers. He recently set up both our goals in the Madrid Legends match.

9) Markus Babbel

The German was an important part of our treble-winning team in 2001, while he also helped us pick up both the Community Shield and the Super Cup the following season. Illness brought his career to a premature end.

8) Rob Jones

Played almost 200 Premier League games for the Reds before his career was brought to an early end by an injury. He dominated the position for us during the 1990s and won both the FA Cup (1992) and the League Cup (1995).

7) Tommy Lucas

He joined Liverpool in 1916, but had to wait three years to make his debut due to the First World War. He remained a regular until the early 1930s, finishing his career with more than 300 appearances to his name.

6) Ray Lambert

The Welshman joined Liverpool in 1939 and stayed with us until the mid-1950s. He played more than 300 times, winning a single First Division title and reaching the FA Cup final in 1950. A one-club man through and through.

5) Ephraim Longworth

Our right-back during the early 20th century. He played almost 400 games prior to 1928, winning two Football Championship medals and winning five England caps. He was the first Reds star to captain the Three Lions.

4) Donald McKinlay

Another player who impressed either side of the First World War, having also been part of the side that won the title in 1922 and 1923. He won a couple of caps for Scotland only for his career to be cut short by injury.

3) Steve Nicol

An important part of some of the best Liverpool sides, playing almost 350 games for us between 1981 and 1994. He picked up five first division titles, three FA Cups and the European Cup among 14 major honours.

2) Chris Lawler

The right-back of choice for us during the 1960s and early 1970s. He won nine titles, including three first division titles and the UEFA Cup. He played more than 400 league games for us and won four caps for England.

1) Phil Neal

Followed Lawler into the team in the mid-1970s and kept the position for more than a decade. He played more than 450 league games for us and helped us lift four European Cups. He also won 50 caps for the Three Lions.
