Liverpool XI of most expensive signings, with Roberto Firmino joining the party

Have you ever wondered what £221m worth of talent looks like? Well wonder no longer, the team below is officially Liverpool’s most costly XI – made up of the most expensive players we’ve ever signed in each position.

Interestingly, six of Brendan Rodgers’ signings made the cut, including his latest addition – Brazilian international Roberto Firmino, who joined us in a £29m deal earlier this week.

GK) Simon Mignolet (£9m, Sunderland)

The Belgian has had a decent couple of years at Anfield. His form took a turn towards the end of the 2013-14 campaign and he carried that into the start of last season, but he’s improved again since the turn of the year.

RB) Glen Johnson (£17.5m, Portsmouth)

Released by Liverpool at the end of last season after six years at Anfield. Started well on Merseyside but his performances over the last couple of years have often been somewhat disappointing. Should have achieved more.

LB) Alberto Moreno (£12m, Sevilla)

Arrived at Liverpool last summer and was put straight into the team. He had a decent year, while his age suggests that we’re yet to see the best of him. If can continue to improve then he should prove himself and his price tag.

CB) Dejan Lovren (£20m, Southampton)

Another Rodgers signing, the Croatian endured a very difficult first season at Anfield. After starting the season poorly he quickly found himself out of favour. Only after an injury to Mamadou Sakho did he get another chance.

CB) Mamadou Sakho (£15m, Paris Saint Germain)

Injuries have plagued his first two seasons at the club. We’ve seen flashes of his quality thus far but we’re still waiting to see the talent that has starred in the past for both Paris Saint Germain and the French national team.

DM) Javier Mascherano (£18.6m, West Ham United)

The Argentine was a truly wonderful player for us, helping us reach a Champions League final and come second in the Premier League under Rafael Benitez. Since joining Barcelona he has become one of the very best around.

CM) Alberto Aquilani (£17.1m, Roma)

Injuries ruined what looked to be a very promising career. The Italian barely got chance to show what he could do at Liverpool and was quickly shipped out on loan. The deal eventually became permanent and Aquilani was gone.

CM) Adam Lallana (£25m, Southampton)

Yet another player who has struggled with injuries since arriving Anfield, albeit not quite to the same degree. A couple of minor problems have stopped us from seeing the best of him so far. Let’s hope that changes soon.

AM) Roberto Firmino (£29m, Hoffenheim)

The latest addition to our armoury. Everything is pointing towards him being a good addition for us, although let’s hope that the media doesn’t place too much pressure on him. He’s still young and needs to be given time.

ST) Luis Suarez (£22.8m, Ajax)

One of the deadliest strikers in Liverpool’s history. If it were not for the controversy that has littered much of his career then he surely would be ranked alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

ST) Andy Carroll (£35m, Newcastle United)

The big man has never managed to live up to his early hype from back when he was a Newcastle player. Injuries have taken their toll and now he seems to be nothing more than a glorified target man trying to get on the end of long balls from the back at West Ham.
