Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has told our official website that he wants his teammates to use the heartache of last season to inspire them to produce bigger and better performances this time around.

The Slovakian admitted that finishing sixth in the Premier League, missing out on the knockout rounds of the Champions League and losing in two domestic cup semi-finals made for a tough twelve months. However, he’s confident that we’re going to be a much better side next season.

“When you lose or have a bad season it’s an awful feeling,” he said. “You are sad and disappointed and you don’t really want to speak to anyone. I don’t kick a wall or shout but it stays with you for a long time.

“I always try to look at why we lost or why I didn’t perform well. I think you have to do that because you need to see why something happened. And I know the only place you can change it is out on the training field, so you have to work hard there to improve.”

Skrtel’s current contract situation still remains somewhat unclear. The Daily Mail appeared to confirm that a deal had been reached earlier this month, only for their report to be denied by those in the defender’s camp.

As the Daily Express reports, Skrtel is thought to be unhappy with a specific clause in his new contract which would require him to play a minimum number of games in order to be entitled to his full wage.

“I have my own profile on Facebook. I use it for communication with my fans and I operate it through the agency Stars and Friends,” they quote the defender as saying.

“I strongly disavow the profile on which the false information was published. I have not created the profile and I do not have a clue who the administrator is.”

His agent, Karol Csonto, added: “At the moment I can confirm that we are negotiating the matter with the club, but we have not signed the contract yet. We will inform fans and media when it happens.”
