The Reds have been making astonishing progress so far this month, having also completed deals for James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino.

The 24-year-old England international defender has been a key member of Southampton’s squad since their promotion to the Premier League in 2012. However, he was out of contract next summer, and the Saints were clearly determined not to lose him on a free.

Clyne made the step-up to the England team last year, following the World Cup, replacing former Liverpool star Glen Johnson, who he’ll now also succeed at Anfield.

He comes to us off the back of 104 games and five goals for Southampton in all competitions, with one of his strikes having come against us on the opening day of last season.
