Liverpool transfer news
In the list below, we’ve compiled all you need to know about our new man. So have a read through and – hopefully – get excited about the prospect of seeing him in action for the Reds in just a couple of weeks time, once our pre-season campaign has begun!
Basic Information:
- Nathaniel Clyne was born in Stockwell – near London – on 5 April 1991, making him 24 years old.
- Clyne is an out and out right-back who will provide us with the ideal replacement for the departing Glen Johnson, who has left the Reds after six years at Anfield following the expiration of his contract.
- Clyne is an attacking full-back who likes to pick up possession deep and run with the ball down the flank. He tends to play short basses and keeps it simple rather than attempting ambitious cross-field lobs. His tackling is strong as well, although he can be caught out in the air on occasion.
Club Career:
- Clyne began his career with Crystal Palace. He made the step-up into the first-team in 2008 after almost a decade working with the academy. He played more than 100 times for the club in all competitions and repeatedly helped them avoid relegation from the Championship.
- Clyne was twice voted Palace’s Young Player of the Year (in 2009 and 2010), while he was also named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year following the 2011-12 campaign.
- He made the step up to the Premier League when he joined Southampton in 2012. He’s played 94 of the Saints’ top flight fixtures since their return to the division, helping them fully establish themselves as one of the countries elite sides and leading them to a return to European football.
International Career:
- Clyne was a regular in the England youth team set-up, playing seventeen times in total for the Under-19s and the Under-21s.
- He made his full-England debut in 2014. After being an unused substitute against San Marino and Estonia he was finally handed his first appearance in an England shirt against Slovenia. He’s since won five caps.
- Despite his lack of experience at an international level, Clyne is widely looked upon as the Three Lion’s first choice right-back, following the injury problems of both Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker.
Fun Facts:
- Clyne has only scored four league goals in his entire career and one of them was against Liverpool, on the opening day of last season. He’s also netted twice against Aston Villa and once against Reading.
- Clyne is the eighth man in history to move from Southampton to Liverpool, but also the fourth in the last twelve months – following our deals for Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.
- Nathaniel has a tattoo of himself as a three-year-old on his arm holding a football. Other tattoos he sports include Big Ben, a phone box and the London Eye.
