The Liverpool Echo are today reporting that Martin Skrtel has agreed, in principle, to a new three-year contract at Anfield. According to the Echo, the deal will be signed next week upon his return to pre-season training on Monday.

Of course, we shouldn’t start celebrating quite yet. Skrtel has already turned down one offer from the club which he deemed unacceptable, while last month he spoke out angrily after the Daily Mail had claimed that a compromise had been reached.

“I think a contract like this is offered to players who are much older than me, or to players who have had health complications,” he said at the start of June, as the Echo tells us.

His agent, Karol Csonto, also confirmed via the Metro: “At the moment I can confirm that we are negotiating the matter with the club, but we have not signed the contract yet. We will inform fans and media when it happens.”

Thanfully, a deal finally looks to have been struck after further negotitations between ourselves and the Slovakian, who is closing in on 300 appearances for the Reds.

The 30-year-old, who joined us from Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2008, was approaching the final twelve months of his previous contract and everyone involved with Liverpool will no doubt be delighted to see this lengthy saga finally resolved.

Joe Allen is expected to be the next Liverpool player to put pen to paper, say the Echo. The Welshman still has two years left to run on his current deal but will reportedly extend his stay in the near future.
