Real Madrid have given up hope on Asier Illarramendi making the required grade for them, and according to Spanish publication Marca (cited here in the Mirror), they’d consider selling him to Liverpool this summer.

Steven Gerrard’s departure to LA Galaxy has left a significant gap in central midfield, and bar impressive utility man James Milner, a direct replacement has yet to be signed.

Emre Can is expected to move from defence into a more natural midfield role next season, but most fans would still like us to bring in another player to compete with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Joe Allen and Lucas for these roles.

Illarra is 25-years-old, and for the right price (and Marca reckon Madrid will sell for cheap) – would prove an excellent addition this summer. He prides himself on the combination of crisp passing and midfield creativity with intense defensive and ball winning skills.

We’d love Illarra to sign, and would consider him the second most exciting summer acquisition behind Roberto Firmino if we managed to make it happen.

Then only a new striker would be needed for us to approach the start of the 2015/16 campaign with complete confidence.
