Liverpool set to make bid for Montenegro striker who’s £16.5m cheaper than Benteke

A new report from the Metro, cited heavily in the Telegraph, reckons that because Aston Villa are refusing to budge on their £32.5m asking price for Christian Benteke, Liverpool will turn their attentions elsewhere.

And they claim that a £16m bid for Stevan Jovetic is being strongly considered – which if accepted – would make him over 50% cheaper than the Belgian powerhouse.

Jovetic is Manchester City’s fourth choice striker behind Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and January acquisition Wilfried Bony – and after being cut from the Champions League squad in 2014/15 – he’d surely consider a transfer away from the Etihad.

The Montenegro striker has talent, and in truth, has not been given a fair crack of the whip since transferring from Fiorentina two summers ago. Manuel Pellegrini has only given him 30 Premier League appearances – and most of those from the bench.

We’d much rather see us sign Jovetic for £16m than Benteke for £32.5m. Jovetic is more mobile, offers an option running in behind the defence and therefore suits our style of play far better.

£16m in this day and age is not huge money for a player of Jovetic’s talent – and we’ve shown previously with Daniel Sturridge that a hungry striker out of favour with a top Premier League club can show them what they’re missing with us.
